Pap Corps Donates $3.2 million for Cancer Research
In May of every year the Papanicolaou Corps for Cancer Research, a grassroots organization in South Florida with more than 21,000 members, donates millions of dollars for cancer research programs and clinical trials at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Sylvester’s partner in the search for a cancer cure, Pap Corps members have worked tirelessly for 58 years to raise funds for vital multidisciplinary research on all types of cancer.
On Monday, May 10 about seven hundred members attended the 2010 Donor Luncheon at Boca Raton Resort and presented their $3.2 million dollar check to Dr. Joseph Rosenblatt, Interim Director of Sylvester, Dr. Jerry Goodwin, Chief Medical Officer of Sylvester/UMHC, and Dr. Pascal J. Goldschmidt, Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs and Dean of the Miller School of Medicine.
“I just want to say how proud I am to hand over this check,” said Tutsie Lipkin, president of the Pap Corps. She then reminded everyone that “there are still many roads to travel on our course to cure cancer … cancer doesn’t relax for a minute and neither can we.”
Dr. Rosenblatt received the check and thanked the entire Corps. “You all inspire us and I want all 21,000 of you to know you are our best friends. As you work to fund our shared mission today, you’ve laid the groundwork for a stronger tomorrow. You’ve built new programs and committees that are just now starting to bear fruit. You allow us to do what we love to do, and I can’t thank you enough.”
Guest Speaker Dean Goldschmidt said, “I love this group. It’s America at its best. I know the damage that cancer can do, but with an army we can fight the disease, destroy the disease, and create a world without cancer. On behalf of the University of Miami Miller School and UHealth, I thank you from my heart.”
Installation of Pap Corps officers followed with incoming President Naomi Prever accepting her role of leadership. “Sylvester fights every type of cancer using cutting edge medicines and treatments. As Sylvester has grown, so has the Pap Corps. Its volunteers are the champions for cancer research, raising funds to find the cure. I vow that I will never rest until I know that our doctors will find the cures or at least alleviate the pain of those I love. My hope for the next two years is that as a team, the Pap Corps will have many touchdowns and score many victories over cancer. ”
