The Pap Corps − the Country's Largest All-Volunteer Organization Dedicated Solely to Funding Research on ALL TYPES of Cancer – Celebrates Its 60th Birthday in 2012
The Pap Corps, founded in 1952 by a handful of women, now has over 21,000 members in Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade Counties. When the founding members decided to support cancer research, they chose Dr. George Papanicolaou as their beneficiary for his brilliant research at the Dade County Cancer Institute in Miami. They named their organization after the doctor, whose office was soon relocated to the UM campus.
The Pap Corps has grown in both size and scope over the past 60 years. In fact, it has become the largest ALL-volunteer organization in the United States dedicated solely to funding research on ALL TYPES of cancer. With NO executive salaries and low overhead expenses, it has donated over $40 million to cancer research, more than $29 million in the last ten years alone. These funds support research at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, South Florida’s only university-based cancer center.
In celebration of its 60th Birthday, The Pap Corps’ theme for 2012 is Birthday Cheers for 60 Years. Members are scheduling an array of events to raise awareness of their mission and their continued need for greater membership and increased funding:
- Super Bowl Week (January 31 – February 7) The Corps is teaming up with Panera Bread at its 25 locations in Palm Beach and Broward Counties for a SOUPerBOWL fundraiser.
- On Saturday, March 24, it will expand its 12th Annual Walkathon and Health Fair to include a Tailgate Barbeque Lunch. The location: Florida Atlantic University’s Boca Raton campus.
- On Monday, October 29, a Golf Tournament Fundraiser at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach.
"We are very proud of our achievements over these past 60 years," said Naomi Prever, president of The Pap Corps. "We have witnessed some incredible scientific advances that have helped countless people live longer, more-productive lives. The Pap Corps' mission is to create a world without cancer. We know that our goal is possible!"
The Corps’ Executive VP, JoAnne Goldberg, added, "We are expanding our outreach, looking to add new volunteers to our group. As government spending on research diminishes, these funds become ever more critical as a source of seed money for research by Sylvester’s physicians and scientists. It’s more important than ever to join our life saving efforts."
